Doula FAQs

What’s a doula?

Doulas aren't only for births. They're non-medical professionally trained support people that can help during any life transition like, end of life, abortion/loss, fertility, relationships, sex, etc. A birth doula is a trained professional who supports, advocates, educates, coaches, and nurtures new parents through the pregnancy, birth, & postpartum period. Medical professionals will come and go but a birth doula is a familiar trusted person to have on your side that can help you as you prep to give birth to your baby.

Will a doula deliver my child(ren)?

Nope, but a doula and will support you throughout your journey in more ways than one, including offering advice based on current observations & suggesting non-medical care options that have a holistic approach to your wellbeing. I cannot make any medical diagnosis, perform any treatments, or deliver a baby. As your doula, it's my responsibility to be a part of your team alongside your medical providers as they take care of your medical/physical health be it for childbirth, postpartum, miscarriage/stillbirth, induced abortion, etc. I've got your back no matter what, but I'm there to coach and not catch.

Will a doula replace my spouse/partner?

Nope again! As your doula, I'm there for your family as a whole as it grows and this means that I'm also there to encourage and help your partner as they support you. Birthing people have a lot of work to do and it can be overwhelming at times, but it can also be overwhelming mentally and physically for the partner. Spouses/partners don't have to carry the pressure of everything on their shoulders with a doula around because there's more communication and balance overall. Here's an interesting article about the point of view from birth partners during labor.

So, what will you do?

I will work with you and for you to ensure that you are continuously supported physically, mentally, and emotionally. I will respect your personal values, your goals, your choices, and your decisions. I will assist you in ensuring that you and your partner are informed about all your options.

I will provide help with comforting techniques for childbirth like breathing, relaxation, movement, positioning and other supportive measures, no matter what your choices for medication are. I will provide resources and suggestions on how to best support yourself nutritionally, preconception, during pregnancy, and after birth. If you're not up to cooking, I can step in and do that, too!

Essentially, I’m there to assist in making you comfortable along with encouraging and empowering you to embrace how powerful you are in this moment no matter where you are in your current journey of parenthood.

Do you support births outside of the hospital setting?

Yes! Whether it’s a birthing center, at your home, or in a hospital setting, if that’s your choice - you'll have the support you need.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes! I believe that doulas should be afforded to every birthing person and their families, no matter what their finances look like. I'm more than happy to talk with you and find a payment plan that fits your needs.

How do you doula?

The “get to know each other” session, first prenatal session, and monthly check-ins are held virtually. The second prenatal session is done in person. Both birth and postpartum support is done in person as well, unless agreed upon to be virtually.

I exhibit great precaution with everything that I do to reduce my risk of exposure to germs & such, to keep my family and those that I support safe.
